A room for cars

Cape Dutch house

A new detached garage building in the grounds of an historic house designed in a Cape Dutch Style. The new building is sympathetic to the unique design of its parent building.

The property is in a Conservation Area and has a number of large protected trees so the building is constructed with no-dig technology - piles supporting a floor slab that is entirely above the ground, which allows air and water to the tree roots below.

The line of the drive was cut with an air-spade to ensure that no tree roots would be damaged and the stone setts are on a cellular mat to spread the load and allow water to percolate through to the roots below.

Great care has been taken to match the detailing of the original house while building to modern standards, resulting in a dramatic setting for the client's cars that also contributes to the Conservation Area and the setting of the historic house.
