A new contemporary house with a courtyard garden in a Conservation Area, integrating the inside and outside spaces.

This challenging end-of-garden plot slopes steeply up from the road and is surrounded by large family houses in generous gardens.  The clients want to downsize but remain in the area which is a common situation but often hard to accommodate, particularly in Conservation Areas.

The new house makes a virtue of the slope and is a series of interlocking spaces that cascade down the hillside.  The living rooms open onto a private courtyard garden while the bedrooms are in a separate wing cut into the ground at the rear of the site. The master bedroom looks over the new green roofs to the park beyond.  The design minimises the impact on the Conservation Area and is unique to the site, it has therefore received planning permission.
