New gabled house

Gables to front and back of new house

This new home was designed to meet a very bespoke brief and to respond to the elevated site and precise orientation.

The double ridge and use of gables avoided the bulk of a flat roof and generated a well modulated and dynamic elevation.  The central gable on both the front and rear of the house has a coped Dutch gable in a beautiful brick and the natural slate roof has swept eaves and exposed rafter feet.

According to Pevsner there is a history of the use of Dutch gables in Surrey from the early 17th century Flemish gables of the Jacobean Abbot’s Hospital in Guildford, via Brook House in Chobham to the later C17 Artisan houses throughout Surrey.

The appearance and style of this building follows the arts and crafts tradition of responding to the needs of each room in the context of its site.
