New barns in Dorset

New barns in conservation area

This design for this development of eight new 1, 2 and 3 storey dwellings was conceived as a conversion of two large barns, the earliest parts originating from the 18th Century on this sloping site in the Stalbridge Conservation Area.

The original barns were largely constructed in rubble stone with some brick detailing and corrugated metal or plain clay tiled roofs. It became clear that the buildings would actually have to be fully rebuilt so planning permission was obtained to build eight new 1, 2 and 3 storey dwellings working within the form and appearance of the original barns but constructed to meet modern building regulations.

The layout of the units works with the sloping site and is designed to maximise views of the open countryside to the north east. The choice and variety of materials used on external facades together with internal details such as vaulted ceilings was carefully considered to retain a memory of the original barns.
